Or as some might say - fitting your knit garments. And this doesn't mean that we stretch them until they are at their limit of stretch - it means we fit them to our bodies. Part of the knit garment is snug, and some of it drapes. That's really
the most beautiful way to wear knits.
From something a little older, but Gwyneth Paltrow in court, was a full-on display of this type of fit.
This is typical of a classic sweater that has all the right fit, but isn't too bulky. The day she wore thi sin court, the sweater was loose and nice, but the pants were slim and fitted, which made an elegant look.
This is exactly the sort of look a knit fit should have. Notice how the sleeves are on the shoulder (one of my key giveaways for a good fit), and the waist has a lovely soft band around it, but that the rest of the sweater is looser and yet doesn't look
baggy or too tight. The elegant chain necklace makes a nice elegant look without looking gaudy or too much.
I'm reminded of how Martha Stewart dressed for her court appearances, and while Gwyneth was the epitome of good style and taste (which SCREAMS wealth), Martha was all showy and almost flaunting her expensive looks, and that not only didn't sit well with the jury, but the judge as well
It wasn't enough to wear one Birkin bag (they cost around $42,000 back then), but she had to have two as if to flaunt that she had more than one. Some of us are doing good to have a $100 knock-off! And the custom fur neck scarf might be great around the
swells, but not in court. There's a fine line here between the showy and the quiet. One of the things that makes Gwyneth's looks so
quiet is that you can get knockoffs any place around, BUT Gwyneth is wearing the original 100 14K model.

The reason these classic pieces are copied and knockedoff is because they are classic.
Each one of these easily has an exquisitely classic look - they are good today and ten years from today. So when someone with an elegantly styled sweater wears one of these, it looks like a total look and is very classy and classic. Good today and
good ten years from now. They are from - apparently, I can't paste in the hyperlink, so here's the site to purchase these: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BABEINA Here are some more eye candy for
that classic look from Carolyn Bessett Kennedy.
The ultimate knit in a luxurious black for a classic formal look. This is for those who say that knit can't be formal. When it is, you'll be the only one comfortable all night!
And then there's the white blouse.
It's so classic looking that it makes you not only look fashionable but really smart. This look stole the show at Oscars, when she was asked who did the blouse, and said GAP - there was a mad race to the stores the next day.
But the truth is that Carolina Herrera has been doing this for decades and she makes it look so beautiful. A classic white blouse out of a white silk taffeta can totally make a gorgeous look.
Knits can bring you new insight when you let them drape and be what they should be.
From tailored jackets to draping tops, they can be comfortable and forgiving to sew.
Whether your working with a draping knit (left) or a more stable knit (right), it comes doing to a good fit.
- The shoulders hit ON THE SHOULDERS
- The garment hangs nicely from the shoulders
- You have a certain part accentuated
- The rest of the garment drapes straight and even
So that when you're done, you end up with something as classic as Gwyneth, Caroline, and Carolina, and last decades. That sort of thinking is revolutionary because we have all become accustomed to throwing away our clothes. We don't have to do that. At the same time, we don't have to wear skin-tight knits with the armhole halfway down our biceps. An elegant hang and drape of ponte,
jersey, and activewear are missed when we work at making things too tight.
Hopefully this will make you not only think differently about how you make up your knits, but how you think about them in general. That's what I really like to do with these weekly messages.
Today, think about how you can make a knit drape on your body and look classic! There is a look for all of us that fits that bill, and once you find it, it's so much fun to play with.
Some of you asked questions about last weeks message, and I had already started this, so I'll talk about that next week for sure! As always I love your comments and questions. This always helps me make these weekly goodies more special for you!
